What is a Window Regulator
What is a Window Regulator

A window regulator is a mechanical assembly inside the door of your car that allows you to roll your window up or down with the touch of a button or by a crank handle.

Types of Window Regulators

There are two types of regulators – manual and electric. Manual regulators require a person to operate the movement of the regulator using a hand crank.

Electric regulators (Power window regulators) are more commonly today. A window regulator is an automated device which activates by pressing a toggle switch or a button found on the armrest of the car door closest to the window.

Power Window Regulator

The motor window regulator became a staple of the vehicles around the 1960s, and most vehicles are sold today equipped with power window regulator.

A window regulator is the mechanism that controls your door glass to move up and down. In vehicles with power windows, the window regulator gets its power from an electric motor which is called the window motor. In some cars, the window motor comes with the window regulator as one unit; in others, the window motor is separate.

With most vehicles, an automated window regulator system is configured so the driver can control the movement of all windows in the car or truck. This arrangement efficiently allows drivers to adjust front and back seat windows without using the controls situated by each of the passenger windows in the vehicle.
